SAFER STREETS FOR OUR STUDENTS

2/23/2024 2:26 pm

The CVHS PTO held a general meeting (starting after general business) on February 22, 2024, in Houston, Texas. During the meeting, the Executive Board was presented with information about the Safe Routes to School Montrose project by concerned parents and residents of Montrose, Katy, and Mehdi Rais. In addition to this, Carnegie alumni Alex Spike and Kevin Strickland from Walk And Roll Houston also sought PTO support for the project.

After careful consideration, the CVHS PTO voted in favor of supporting this safety measure for students, teachers, and families. The organization firmly believes that this decision aligns perfectly with its mission statement.

Follow this website for updates on action items and how you can be more actively involved in our effort to make the streets around Carnegie Vanguard safer.

  • The Montrose RDA/TIRZ 27 is seeking input and support in their pursuit of funding for two important projects via the Texas Department of Transportation's 2023 Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Program:

    • Safe Routes to Schools: replacing sidewalks on portions of 12 neighborhood streets to provide safer pathways to schools, including improved accessibility and traffic calming measures.
    • Waugh Drive Bike Lane: adding protected bike lanes from West Dallas Street to Allen Parkway, creating additional connectivity and access and improved safety.

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a national program that encourages walking and biking to school for grades K-8 through funding infrastructure improvements, enforcement, tools, safety education, and other incentives. The State of Texas designates h-GAC as the region's MPO for transportation planning. It serves Safe Routes to School efforts in the following eight counties: Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, and Waller Counties.

SRTS programs within the 8-county region, across the state and the nation, have improved safety and increased active transportation for students, focusing on the 6 Es of SRTS – Engagement, Equity, Engineering, Encouragement, Education, and Evaluation. The resources below provide information for funding opportunities with the state and tools and resources to create or enhance a program at our school.

This is an excellent opportunity to make a difference in our community, and we appreciate your support in making the IMPROVEMENTS around CVHS a reality.
